whatcha makin' now?

As you know, I've been working with copper a lot lately and over the weekend I got down to making some more ear wires for some new industrial themed jewelry. Typically, I make the ear wires on the left; very simple. The thing is, the opening for the loop at the end, where the earring goes through, is facing outwards. So like, if I was wearing the earrings in the picture, and you were looking at me, you would see the end of the copper wire facing you.

I thought, well, these are simple and easy ear wires, and they look good, but having the unfinished end of a wire facing the viewing public might not always be well received by customers.

(I don't know really, I'm just guessing. I would notice these things, since I make the jewelry, but I don't know that most of the buying public would notice.)

So I made another pair, shown on the right. This one has the unfinished end facing the back, so if you were behind the person wearing these earrings, you would see the unfinished end. This style ear wire takes a little more time (to adjust for balance and symmetry) and there are more bends in it, which means that there would be more plier marks on it to sand out.

(I've really learned to loosen my grip on my pliers. saves me lots of sanding time.)

So while both are nice, I'm not sure which one would be preferred by customers, so I'm asking for your input.

If you were buying, which would you prefer? the simple ones on the left? or the fancy wavy ones on the right?

Shadowbox challenge reveal!

Way back in July, Lorelei gave us a challenge: to make something FAB-O out of these shadowboxes by Sara Lukkonen of C Koop beads. These have some beautiful colors and you can do so much with them. I was lucky enough to be chosen as a participant for the challenge.  In fact, everyone listed here was lucky enough to be chosen as a participant:
11. Grubbi

We've had about a month to prepare for our reveal date, and by gosh! It's here already!
Et Voila! the big reveal!

My shadowbox had 2 holes on one side, and 1 hole on another. I used colored wire for accent, and silver beads to frame the blue ceramic bead in the center. The center bead is more sentimental than fancy, as this bead was part of the packaging to some handmade soap my beloved and I bought together, shortly after we started dating. I have kept it all this time, trying to figure out what to do with it.
I used other large silver beads for accent, and hemp cording to tie it all together.

with a handmade copper hook and loop for the ends.

Don't forget to check out what everyone else made! This was a great project. I always like a challenge. A big thanks to Lorelei and Sara for making it happen.

Hurricane Irene

So we are preparing for high winds today, from 20-30 mph sustained. The Lynx buses can't run if sustained winds are higher than 30mph, so this should be fun for all those that depend upon the bus. Right now, we have hardly any clouds, but some wind, which makes it nicer for being outside. The sky is almost totally clear of clouds, and lots of blue sky, but soon enough, our skies will look like this picture. It's always strange when a hurricane comes through. There is lots of blue sky, some wind, then it gets really quiet, and dark, and lots of swirling clouds. It's true what they say about animals knowing what's up. When the rash of 2004 hurricanes came through, it was the same every time. And when it really started to get bad, there was *no sound* whatsoever from the animals. No birds, no squirrels, NOTHING. It's like they all disappeared, it was weird. That hasn't happened just yet, but I betcha it will come very close. Hurricane Irene is supposed to come close to us, but not be a big threat. But that could change in an instant. So for now, it's just wind, which makes a nice breeze.

Hope you are enjoying your weather.

back in the swing

Toby cuteness
puppy cuteness abounds here lately and after almost a month of getting to know each other, we are *kind of* into a schedule now. He is house trained and knows how to use the doggie door. he's a fast learner for a little guy! He LOVES his big brother, Scotty. He's always trying to kiss him and he lies next to him as often as possible. Scotty is not always thrilled with the puppy, as he is old and grouchy.  But he's very patient with him and gentle. They are so cute to watch. Scotty has been a little jealous too. So are the cats. Moses is none too happy about Toby and we have had to watch him to make sure Moses doesn't spray in the house.

belated pictures of my soup to send to Germany! that's right folks! I got me an international partner and I am thrilled to death! Her name is Doris Stumpf and she has some gorgeous beads of her own to show off! and a cute puppy too! Check out her blog, and unless you speak German, you're gonna need the translator.

I'm always up for learning a new language...

whatcha makin' now?

some more copper earrings. I'm just so pleased with how they turned out. The solder look is cool too. FINALLY found some 18ga wire for the ear wires. MUCH easier on the ears than 16ga. I don't know how those kids stick those large ear wires through their ears, it's really uncomfortable and hurts. Ah well, when I was young I did dumb stuff to look cool too. Although, what I did, didn't leave any permanent visible signs in my later years.

Just took puppy for a walk through the neighborhood. EVERYTHING is fascinating to him and all the noises are so interesting. Cats don't know what to make of him. It's so funny. He is passed out on my lap now. We need to get him a lap pillow so it's more comfortable and he doesn't slip through my knees to the floor. I'm getting in the habit of getting to bed early enough so that I can stay awake after Nate leaves for work so I can take him for a walk early a.m. Otherwise, Toby is all restless and anxious and just causing trouble by bothering his sisters or wanting to run around and chew on everything. Like puppies do.  I'd love to be able to stay at home with him all day, or take him to work and have him nap on my lap all day. He's so cute 'ems!

I am getting back into a schedule after not having one for so long. It feels good. I don't feel as distracted and unbalanced. Being a Libra, we are all about balance; that's our sign BTW, so it means something I suppose. It almost feels like growing pains again, but at 43yo, it's almost weird to be having that. Well, life is a constant learning lesson and process, things are always changing, there are always new things to learn, so I guess this cannot really be that foreign. My whole perspective is changing, and I guess that's not so bad.

All is well otherwise. How about you? Any new growing pains?

Noodlehead: bicycle bucket tutorial

Now that we have the cute little monkey puppy Toby, we need a basket like this to tote him around!

A little bigger than this though, I think.
How cute 'ems!

meet Toby

If you haven't already. He's our newest addition to the family. He's about 3 months, we adopted him from orange county animal services. He is the sweetest, cutest little thing! He has kept us both busy lately, with house training, and watching him to make sure he doesn't slip through the hole in the fence that the cats get through. He already knows where it is, and I'm not sure how we're going to solve that problem. I'd rather not put a shock collar on him, (he's so tiny!), but I don't want him wandering into the street or being picked up by someone else. Also, he's so small that an owl might mistake him for food! He doesn't go out at night, only if we are with him, and on a leash as well. He loves to run! We took him to the dog park yesterday and he had a good time playing chase with his cousins:

Rex chasing Toby

So needless to say, it's like having a baby in the house. We don't get much else done around here, and this is the first time in days that I have had a chance to sit down at the computer to write. I have a few things to catch up on, so I think I'll be especially busy this week.

He is such a cutie pie and is so much fun to have around. It's only been a week and a half, so I have to remind myself that he's still new here. The cats still have yet to get used to him. He tries to play with them, but it doesn't work out to his liking:

I hope to be back in the swing of things soon. Nothing lasts forever right? and sometimes an unscheduled break is just what a body needs.

whatcha makin' now?

working on some washers and found items for earrings. These are very light, kinda different, and colorful; with the blue washers and all.

gray washers. with some kind of code on them. interesting....

the puppy keeps us busy lately (go figure) but he is so funny and such a joy to have around. He was playing with Scotty's toy the other day and Scotty tried to get in on the mix, since it WAS his toy and all. It was too funny to watch.  Now Toby has found Moses's ball with the bell in it. Toby is such a toy hog! He thinks they are all his! The cats are getting more used to him. It'll take awhile.

I'll be playing catch up - again - this weekend. What are you catching up on?

newest member of the family

Nate & Toby
Nate has been wanting a small dog for forever, so last weekend we went to animal services to see what we could find. Nate fell in love with this little guy, so we put in our application, waited a few days to see if the owners would come looking for him, and when they didn't, we took him home! His name is Toby and he is so full of energy! We are working on the house training and the cats aren't quite sure what to think of him.

He's smaller than they are.

Scotty isn't too fond of him, but it's only the first day, so the adjustment will be awhile. I have high hopes that we'll all learn to get along soon enough.

Toby helped me out in the yard today for a bit. It was so hot and humid and uncomfortable that we came in by 1030a. I am hoping that TS Emily brings us some rain, but also sucks the humidity out of the air. We could use that too.

03 August 2011

whatcha makin' now?

makin' like I'm relaxin', is what I'm doing here

It was a busy busy last week and a half, I'll tell you. Nate & I were puppy sitting his sister's 2 dogs, jasmine and rex shown here, so we had lots of activity around the house. The cats were none too pleased and they stayed either under the bed, on top of the cupboards, or at least chair height or higher during the dogs whole stay here. For the most part, they were good, they didn't tear up anything they weren't supposed to and we took them to the local dog park almost every evening to exercise them and make them (a little) tired.  The weather cooperated, for the most part, so a good time was had by all. Now we are waiting to see what TS Emily does. I am hoping for it to suck out all the humidity from our air and nothing more. Although, we could use a good dosing of rain. (we planted some new bamboo!)

Back to our regularly scheduled program now that the dogs have gone home, so I'll be working on a couple projects over the weekend. I was lucky enough to be part of Lorelei's shadow box challenge and blog hop, and just signed up for Lori Anderson's bead soup blog party! As well as working on my regular stuff, of course.

I've missed taking my macro shots too, so I'll be having extra fun with the camera this weekend. I am hoping TS Emily doesn't interrupt my big plans.

Any big plans for you? what are you up to?
